In 2025, Shijingshan District will enhance the cultural utilization of its historical relics along the Yongding River and pioneer innovative approaches to preserving and repurposing Shougang's industrial heritage. The district will carry out the high-level redevelopment project of Shougang Coal Bunker while expediting the construction of the Western Beijing Arts Center. These efforts aim to make the district a vibrant hub that showcases the unique charm and vitality of western Beijing.
Shougang Coal Bunker, located in the area designated for the China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) in Shougang Park, was built in 1994 and originally used to store raw coal for coking. It was decommissioned in 2010. Now undergoing redevelopment, the site is planned to be transformed into a space for storing and displaying cultural relics and artworks, with its completion expected by the end of 2026. The renovated project will have a total floor area of approximately 28,300 square meters, including about 3,500 square meters underground and 24,800 square meters above ground, with one underground level and seven above-ground floors planned. The space will serve as a venue for permanent exhibitions, temporary displays, and storage of artworks. The project is not only an endeavor aimed at preserving the industrial cultural heritage and nostalgic memories of locals but also an attempt to offer a high-quality living space for the public. The completion of the project will further enrich the regional cultural and tourism consumption scenarios.
On the west side of Shijingshan Sports Center, plans are underway for the construction of the Western Beijing Arts Center. The project will have a total floor area of approximately 45,000 square meters, with 20,000 square meters above ground, mainly including a 1,800-seat grand theater and a 600-seat multifunctional hall. The underground area of 2,5000 square meters will feature supporting facilities, an underground parking garage, and civil defense spaces. Construction is set to begin in 2025, with the completion expected by 2030. Like the sports center on its east side, this arts center will serve as "core" for the region, creating a cultural, sports, and tourism ecosystem in Shijingshan. This will inject new momentum into the socio-economic development of the district.
The construction of the Western Beijing Arts Center will help address the lack of medium- and large-scale performance venues in Shijingshan District. By establishing a national-level platform to produce performance resources from top-tier art troupes, the center will present high-quality cultural productions and performances, striving to satisfy the cultural needs of the public. Located in a vibrant area in central Shijingshan, the project is expected to serve a population of approximately 300,000 residents in the surrounding neighborhoods. In the future, it will leverage the strategic position of the Chang'an Avenue axis, connecting key landmarks such as Shougang Park, Shijingshan Sports Center, Shijingshan Amusement Park, as well as the district's administrative and commercial hubs. This will enhance urban quality and establish a dynamic public hub for the region.
