1. The work-type residence permits are issued to foreign nationals who work in China. The period of validity of the first permit will be no less than 90 days.
2. The study-type residence permits are issued to foreign nationals who pursue long-term study in China. The period of validity of the first permit will be no less than 180 days.

The reunion-type residence permits are issued to a) family members of Chinese citizens, who stay in China for reunion, b) family members of foreign nationals who obtained permanent residence in China, and c) persons who stay in China for the purposes of foster care and other reasons. The period of validity of the first permit will be no less than 180 days.

The residence permits for private matters are issued to those a) who intend to go to China to visit foreign nationals working or studying in China to whom they are spouses, parents, children under the age of 18, or parents-in-law, and b) who intend to go to China for other private affairs. The period of validity of the first permit will be no less than 180 days.
5. The residence permits for journalists are issued to resident foreign journalists of foreign news agencies stationed in China. The period of validity of the first permit will be no less than 180 days.
