The Regulations of Beijing Municipality on Improving Language Environment for International Exchanges-courier services

The Regulations of Beijing Municipality on Improving Language Environment for International Exchanges is the first local regulations on improving international language environment. It covers three areas, i.e. foreign language facilitation in public services, standardization of foreign language signage, and public engagement.

The Regulations aim to improve Beijing's foreign language environment for international exchanges, facilitate all-round opening up and boost the city's quality development.

With the development of mobile internet and e-commerce, courier services have seen rapid progress, and have changed people’s daily life. It has been part of people’s daily life to receive and deliver international express mails.

Today, we’ll introduce the regulations on foreign language facilitation and some frequently used expressions in the field of post and telecommunications industry.

Article 20 of the Regulations stipulates that the Municipal Administration for Market Regulation, together with the Municipal Foreign Affairs Office shall formulate local standards for the use of foreign languages for public signs in the field of post and telecommunications, and make it public.
 

The Guidelines for the Use of English for Public Signs in the Field of Post and Telecommunications was promulgated on September 24, 2021. It was jointly drafted by Beijing Municipal Foreign Affairs Office, Beijing Municipal Post Administration and Beijing Communications Administration.

The Guidelines specify the Chinese-English translation requirements and methods. The Guidelines also give examples for the convenience of readers.
 

The post offices at Daxing International Airport and around the embassy compounds have foreign language signs and staff capable of speaking foreign languages in place for the convenience of international friends.
